Family History at Work

Wow what a great afternoon, members of our local U3A (University of the Third Age) using the centre to look up local history and some of their families history. Really great use of IT and some new media. Some of the folks stayed back to start Go-On and learn more IT skills. This will help them understand how the internet can help them investigate the area and their own families past.

New Website for Mining Museum

This group has had a website set up by the former chair who is now retired (see right). For a long time they have been unable to edit this website and approached me to do something about this. We have set up some webspace currently shared with two other community groups. This space will eventually replace and become East Cleveland Online and will eventually be the web home of up to 20 community projects. By sharing the cost of hosting in this way they will be more sustainable.

New Year New Online You

We’re all getting excited here about the New year, new online you! campaign, which kicks off in just a few days! From 23rd January for the next four weeks there will be hundreds of events running throughout the country promoting all the fantastic public services that are available online and Destinations is joining in the fun.
We think online services are such a great way for people to change their lives using the internet and unfortunately it’s often those who aren’t online that could benefit the most.

If you fancy starting the New Year off by learning some new online skills or ff you have ever thought that being online just isnt for you, come along and let us show you just what your missing.

M.P. Support

During Get Online Week,we were part of a roadshow which highlighted the plight of rural areas with poor broadband who were unable to make the most of being online. One of the villages involved is also part of out Outreach project,Moorsholm, and we were able to bring examples of how getting online can bring benefits to everyone in the Village. Also at the event, called “Cant Get Online Week” was our local MP,Tom Blenkinsop who offered his support to the project and promised to pursue all initiatives that helped get rural areas online.

Saltburn Public Meeting

Saltburn is creating a Partnership Board

Saltburn Partnership Board is made up of approximately 10 -15 people who represent different fields of interest in and around Saltburn – these individuals represent clusters of interest, and as such, act as a conduit between Saltburn Community Groups, the Saltburn Partnership Board and the Local Authority.  The development of Saltburn Partnership Board has been encouraged by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council with the aim of bringing a partnership of Saltburn’s public and private sectors together to create a successful town centre to benefit all.  The Partnership Board will act to provide a strategic focus and this focus will fit into local strategic themes:

  • Regeneration
  • Health and Well Being
  • Stronger Communities
  • Children and Young People
  • Safer Communities

What does this mean for me?

This means that you have representation when decisions are being made about our town at a strategic level. For example,if you are a member of the 500 Club, there is a 500 Cub member on the Partnership Board,so if you have a brilliant idea for Saltburn or a concern, you can take it to this representative who in turn, will bring it on your behalf to the Partnership Board Meetings. The groups represented on the Partnership Board cover the themes mentioned above –the Police are there,as are the Saltburn Business Association,Tees Valley Leisure and groups like the Arts Association.

 To find out more about the Partnership Board,there will be an open public meeting,details below;

Venue:            Saltburn Community Centre

Date:              11th October 2011

Time:              7.00pm till 8.30pm

so that you can get the opportunity to find out more about it.  If you have any queries or want to know further information please e-mail the Saltburn Partnership Board Workers – Sue Anderson on sue@beallyoucan.co.uk or Paul Davies on p.davies347@ntlworld.com

European Get On Line Day

Telecentre-Europe is planning to celebrate the eSkills Week 2010 through a pan-European initiative focused to bring people online in all European countries. Destinations is delighted to be a part of this and to represent UK Online Centres in England.

Just like inEngland the initiative called Get Online Day will be coordinated by Telecentre-Europe and implemented with the assistance of national partners through telecentres. The date adopted for the one-day event is 4 March 2010.

Check out our dedicated page for more details and to follow our activities up to and including the day. Click here.

European Event

On Thursday 11th February Destinations helped host The Community Animation event in Saltburn. The event was simul-casted and simul-blogged accros the UK ond even areas of Europe since we have made a number of connections with European learning venues recently. The day was a tremendous successes with a full house for the matinee (in which we hooked up with children and police in Latvia) and around 80 people for the evening event. We even made it onto Latvian National TV !

You can relive the event on the blog at www.saltburn.org.uk . As well as the hook-up with Latvia, the event was followed by people in Greece,Lithuania,Poland,Turkey,Sweden,Finland and the UK.

The event saw the world premier of “The Force is With You” made with the local Police, residents of East Cleveland,Whitecliffe Primary School in Carlin How,Destinations and Teesside University. You can enjoy the new film here. Its a bit of fun but has a serious social point to make and uses ICT to reflect some of the feelings and concerns of our local communities.

We were delighted that the Mayor of Redcar &Cleveland and also The Mayor of Loftus came along as well as representatives from the Coucil, the police,Business Link and even some European guests from Finland, who of course we introduced to MyGuide.

If you would like to follow more of te event and see pictures, film, sound and even a clip from Latvian TV,just click here.
